I, too, enjoy finding interesting stones on the ground and identifying family members by the sound of their footsteps.
What made you think of those two?
And while thinking of my pets, I was reminded of how our very first dog knew the sound of my moms car so well that she would perk up and get excited when she was still over a block away. While my hearing doesn't stretch quite as far as hers did, I think it's neat that humans can do the same thing more or less. It's amazing that something so subtle as footsteps or keys could be a way to identify someone.
